Answers to Common Patient Questions
What is MRI and how does it work?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of your body’s organs and tissues. It’s a safe, non-invasive procedure that helps your doctor diagnose various conditions.
Is MRI safe? Does it use radiation?
MRI is very safe and does not use radiation, unlike X-rays or CT scans. Our Open MRI scanners prioritize patient comfort, especially for those with claustrophobia.
What is the difference between Open MRI and Closed MRI?
Open MRI, available at all Mosaic Diagnostics locations, features a spacious design, reducing anxiety for claustrophobic patients. Closed MRI scanners are more enclosed but may provide higher resolution for certain exams. We primarily use Open MRI for patient comfort.
Why is my doctor ordering an MRI?
MRIs are ordered to diagnose conditions affecting bones, joints, the brain, spine, or blood vessels,
providing detailed images to guide treatment.
How long will the MRI scan take?
Most MRI scans at Mosaic Diagnostics take 30–60 minutes, depending on the body part being scanned.
How do I prepare for my MRI?
For most MRI scans, you can eat, drink, and take medications as usual. Follow any specific instructions
provided when scheduling.
Can I eat or drink before my MRI?
Yes, unless instructed otherwise. Mosaic Diagnostics typically does not require fasting for Open MRI
scans.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing without metal (e.g., no zippers, snaps, or jewelry). We provide gowns and
lockers if needed.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring a photo ID, insurance card, physician referral/order, and a list of current medications.
What if I am claustrophobic?
Our Open MRI scanners are designed for comfort. Discuss concerns with our staff or your doctor, who may prescribe a mild sedative (arrange a driver if needed).
Can I have an MRI if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Inform our staff if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. MRIs are generally safe but require medical
clearance in these cases.
Can I have an MRI if I have metal implants, a pacemaker, or tattoos?
Complete our MRI Safety Screening Form to assess compatibility. Some implants are MRI-safe, but
pacemakers and certain metals may require alternative imaging.
What will the MRI sound like?
Expect knocking or buzzing sounds. We provide earplugs or headphones with music for comfort.
Will I feel anything during the scan?
MRI scans are painless. You may feel warmth in the scanned area, which is normal.
Do I have to hold my breath?
Rarely, but the technologist may ask for brief breath-holds for specific scans (e.g., abdominal MRI).
Can I listen to music?
Yes, we offer headphones with music to enhance your comfort during the scan.
What if I need to get the technologist’s attention?
A two-way intercom allows you to communicate with the technologist at any time.
When will my doctor get the results?
Dr. Eric Feldmann interprets your images, and a detailed report is sent to your referring physician within
24–48 business hours.
How do I get a copy of my results or images?
Contact your referring physician for results. Image copies can be requested for a fee; call our office for
details.
Can I drive myself home after the MRI?
Yes, unless you’ve taken a sedative for claustrophobia, in which case you’ll need a driver.
Will my insurance cover the MRI?
Most plans cover MRI scans, but coverage varies. Verify with your insurer.
Do I need pre-authorization?
Many plans require pre-authorization for MRI. Check with your insurance provider or our billing team.
