What Does an MRI Diagnose?
An MRI is a non-invasive method for a medical practitioner to check your organs, tissues, and skeletal system. The MRI scan is utilized to investigate or diagnose soft tissue diseases such as brain tumors, traumatic brain damage, developmental defects, multiple sclerosis, stroke, dementia, infection, and headache reasons. It generates high-resolution images of the inside of the body that aid in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases. MRIs are extremely useful for evaluating the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Eric Feldmann, MD at Mosaic Diagnostic Imaging offers MRI. For more information, contact us or schedule an appointment online. We are conveniently located at 165 N Village Ave Suite 116 Rockville Centre, NY 11570.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans are essential in assessing and diagnosing a wide variety of health conditions or issues that may otherwise go unidentified. MRI scans, CT scans, and X-rays all have their advantages and disadvantages, with MRI scans being the go-to for any conditions that have to do with the health of the soft tissues, the brain, the organs, and the blood vessels. The process of getting an MRI is entirely non-invasive but simply involves some time and a very still patient.
MRIs are used to detect a wide variety of issues throughout the entire body by gathering specific information about any of the soft tissues including the muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, and bones. The images produced from an MRI machine are very accurate, providing detailed images of blood vessels throughout the entire body. A physician may order an MRI test be completed on patients who are experiencing symptoms that affect the internal organs or other bodily symptoms, such as unexplained pain. It is the most effective option available for having visibility of the potential damage done to soft tissues, including due to trauma or disease, or inflammation occurring anywhere in the body. A head MRI may be recommended for patients who are experiencing symptoms including:
– Increased difficulty with hearing, vision, or speaking
– Confusion, weakness, or numbness
– Have recently incurred and injury to the head
– Seizures
– Changes in behavior or thinking
– Vertigo
– Constant headaches, headaches that occur in the mornings, or headaches that develop from sneezing or coughing
– Hypothalamus or pituitary gland-related hormonal balances
An MRI is able to provide detailed images of the soft tissues, arteries, veins, and brain as well as changes in cartilage or bone structure, making it an excellent diagnostic tool for detecting the following conditions:
– Brain tumors
– Brain injuries
– Strokes
– Infections
– Dementia
– Multiple sclerosis
– Aneurysms
– Blocked blood vessels
– Malformations of the arteries
– Carotid artery disease
– Herniated discs
– Spinal tumours
– Compressions of the spinal cord
– Fractures
– Injuries, disease, or aging that has caused changes to the structure of bones or cartilage
The most common diagnostic imaging tools have their own specific benefits and downfalls, often making up in areas where the others lack. MRI scans are best suited for providing detailed images of the soft tissues, the brain, and changes that occur in the bones. Multiple sclerosis is only really detectable through a brain MRI scan as the other types of diagnostic imaging tools are not able to identify the lesions that are present in the brain due to the disease. There are some specific types of cancer that are almost indetectable without an MRI scan, such as uterine cancer, some varieties of liver cancer, and prostate cancer. Brain tumors, injuries to the spinal cord, and injuries to the tendons, muscles, and tendons are best evaluated by an MRI scan as well.
MRI scans are most frequently used to provide visibility of the brain and spinal cord rather than other available diagnostic imaging options. There is a specific type of MRI known as a functional MRI that is used to produce images of blood flow throughout the brain, providing invaluable information regarding the anatomy of the brain and which parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions such as movements and language. This type of image is incredibly useful to have on hand when prepping for brain surgery on a patient.
The results from an MRI scan are not immediately available and will often take multiple days to a week or two before patients will be contacted by their physician regarding the obtained results for routine exams. In the case of emergency situations, the results may be reviewed and provided to the patient within a matter of hours. The scan itself can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the area of the body that is being scanned and if there are any complications during the scan such as movement of the patient that slows down the technician’s ability to receive clear images.
