The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the safest, non-invasive methods for viewing the interior of the human body. Radiofrequency and high-power magnets are used in an MRI to capture images of bones, tissues, and organs.
A variety of disorders can be diagnosed with it, such as multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, tumors of the pituitary gland, strokes at their earliest stages, tendonitis, and infections affecting the brain or spine.
Additionally, it helps physicians assess soft tissue masses, bone tumors, cysts, and herniated or bulging discs in the spine, as well as sports injuries. In contrast to CT (computed tomography), MRI provides better contrast without radiation when imaging the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, and kidneys.
The open MRI machine is configured differently from a conventional MRI machine, primarily to improve patient comfort. In conventional MRIs, patients are slowly sent through a hollow, cylindrical structure. It can be challenging for individuals with claustrophobia to be in such a small, enclosed space.
A person with wide shoulders or a significant amount of weight cannot also be accommodated. MRIs with open sides have magnets above and below the patient, whereas closed MRIs have magnets surrounding the patient. The term “open” may be used to describe MRI scanners that have a shorter and wider cylinder, which provides some comfort, but not the same experience as a fully open one.
It used to be fairly difficult for open MRIs to accommodate the most powerful magnets that could be used on closed MRIs. Because of this, open MRIs would sometimes produce images that were of a lower quality or less precise.
The higher the strength of the magnetic field the higher quality of the image being produced. And a better-quality image promotes a more accurate diagnosis. At Mosaic Diagnostic Imaging patients can expect an open MRI procedure to produce an accurate diagnosis and detailed images thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment available at the clinic.
In addition to effective and accurate diagnosis, open MRIs come with a host of other benefits. An open MRI uses magnets to take images inside your body while still being open. Open MRIs have magnets on top and bottom and are open on all four sides instead of enclosed capsules. As a result, claustrophobia and panic attacks are greatly decreased and patients of all sizes and shapes can utilize MRIs for accurate diagnosis. Patients may have no other option in some cases.
A typical Open MRI scan takes 20 minutes to complete. Including preparations, some scans can take up to 40 minutes. An open MRI examination does not involve any downtime, just like conventional MRI procedures. The process is quick and easy and offers effective results. A traditional MRI procedure can take up to 90 minutes.
You may or may not be required to change into a gown depending on the section of your body being scanned. Contrast material may or may not be administered intravenously by the attending technician at your doctor’s request. When obtaining images with an Open MRI machine, contrast materials are sometimes recommended to enhance clarity.
The best image quality and quickest scanning time are achieved by remaining still during an open MRI scan.
Some patients may take additional measures to help with concerns or anxieties such as requesting a sedative or anti-anxiety medicine or earplugs. They may also choose to wear comfortable clothes, try breathing techniques while in the machine, or have a friend drive them to their appointment if they take sedatives.
